This Spring, New Leaf, is delighted to present a series of classes which combine the ancient disciplines of Ta’i Chi and Mantra Meditation. These evening classes start in March and take place at 7:30pm on Tuesdays in Kanturk and Wednesdays in Charleville and run for a six week period for €65.

It has long been understood, even since ancient times, that we accumulate stress and anxiety in both mind and body. Over time both mind and body become reservoirs for stress and anxiety. We store them in our systems where they have a detrimental effect on both physical and emotional well-being. We need to develop techniques for cleansing mind and body of these toxic elements.

This course will introduce participants to the arts of Ta’i Chi and Mantra Meditation.

There is a growing body of modern scientific evidence which points to the effectiveness of these disciplines, especially when they are combined in a holistic approach to well-being: Mind and Body are not two separate entities, and cannot be separated. That is why the course employs Ta’i Chi to reduce stress in the body, and Mantra Meditation to eliminate anxiety from the mind.

A union of body and mind

Harvard Medical School, and the Mayo Clinic, in the United States, are two of the leading medical research institutions in the world, and have conducted significant investigations into the benefits of Ta’i Chi and Mantra Meditation. “A growing body of carefully conducted research is building a compelling case for Ta’i Chi as an adjunct to standard medical treatment for many conditions associated with age,” according to Peter M. Wayne, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston. “Although Ta’i Chi is slow and gentle it addresses the key components of fitness: muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and, to a lesser extent, aerobic conditioning.”

Tai chi has been found to be just as effective as conventional physiotherapy for the treatment of osteoarthritis in knees.  (Research undertaken by American College of Rheumatology (ACR) – ref: www.sciencedaily.com).

The highly respected Mayo Clinic in the U.S. Outlines the benefits of Ta’i Chi as follows;

  • Decreased stress, anxiety and depression.
  • Improved mood.
  • Improved aerobic capacity
  • Increased energy and stamina
  • Improved flexibility, balance and agility.
  • Improved muscle strength and definition.

Improve your overall well being

According to the Mayo Clinic researchers there is also some evidence that Ta’i Chi helps enhance quality of sleep, improves the immune system, helps blood pressure, improves joint pain, improves symptoms of congestive heart failure, improves overall well-being, reduces risk of falls in older adults.

The Mayo Clinic also describes the emotional benefits of Mantra Meditation as follows:

  • Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations.
  • Building skills to manage stress.
  • Increasing self-awareness.
  • Focusing on the present.
  • Reducing negative emotions.
