Interview with Deirdre Fallon, New Counsellor at New Leaf Health Store

Deirdre Fallon

We are delighted to welcome Deirdre Fallon to the New Leaf Health Store. Deirdre is a highly experienced counsellor, specialising in the management of chronic pain. In this interview, she shares her insights on her approach and how she helps clients.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your work?

Thank you! I’m excited to join the New Leaf Health Store team. I’m a counsellor who focuses on helping people manage chronic pain. I work both online and in person, with a particular interest in pain conditions such as back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia, and repetitive strain injury. Chronic pain is often misunderstood, but with the right approach, it can be managed effectively.

Chronic pain can be incredibly frustrating. How do you help clients manage it?

Chronic pain occurs when the brain misinterprets harmless signals from the body as threats. My job is to help clients understand that while their pain is real, it’s often due to how their brain is processing these signals. Once we break down this misunderstanding, we can work together to “unlearn” the pain through techniques like mindfulness, relaxation, and movement reintroduction.

Can you walk us through some of your techniques?

Absolutely. First, I help clients identify triggers—whether physical movements or emotions. Then we use mindfulness and deep breathing to calm the nervous system. If someone has been avoiding certain activities due to pain, I guide them back to those movements safely. The goal is to show the brain there’s no danger, and the pain often reduces as a result.

How can people reach you if they want to learn more?

They can reach me at 0838138628, or visit my website, woodviewcounsellingcork.ie. I’m available online or at New Leaf Health Store in Kanturk, with evening and weekend appointments too.
